Vintage Pincushion

I do love craft - even if I am rubbish - and I adore these vintage pincushion kits by Cathy of California that she sells on Etsy. Very, very cute and I want one!

Swahili Clock

From the Kamusi Project's duka comes this unique clock that tells the time Swahili style. More about swahili time on their website here.

The Kamusi Project site also has an excellent Swahili-English dictionary and some really useful resources for learning the language. I wish I'd found it a couple of years ago!

Flight of the Conchords - 'Foux Da Fa Fa'

From episode 8 of Flight of the Conchords, just for hubby, I present Foux De Fa Fa. A click through to You Tube will reveal that the video poster was kind enough to include the lyrics if you want to sing-a-long.

Web 2.0 workplaces

A chance to have a nose around the offices of web 2.0 companies such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg and Last fm (which is where the pic below was taken)

The Two Carat Cup

From Fred and Friends comes the 2 carat cup in a jewellery box that I think would take some balls to give to a girl you were not intending to propose to. Although Valentine's Day is looming....

Loads more good stuff on their site - read more at Fun Forever.

I'm not crying

A little treat from Episode 1 of Flight of the Conchords. For me, it all kicks off at 01:50. Genius.

Botanical Architecture

This building in Seoul uses foliage to cover the external and internal walls. I just love the photo of the stairwell. via Inhabitat.

Seven Futuristic Sky Cities

A collection of seven proposed futuristic sky cities from geekabout:

"If you have ever played Sim City 2000 you may or may not already be acquainted with the arcology, a structure of mammoth proportions created to accommodate large populations in sync with the surrounding environment."

Dozey the Dormouse

Aww - had to have a little post today for Dozey as he's so damn cute!

Edible Larvae

Mmm - a yummy treat! These Larvae Chocolates (Youchu Choco) have a grub-shaped body made from milk chocolate and corn flakes, a layer of skin made from white chocolate, legs made from tiny strips of dried squid, and a dainty mouth made from orange peel.

If you want a bit of cheap/free Banksy prints then head over to this shop where "Everything free, simply download the file and process the artwork as per the serving suggestion." Enjoy.

Packing Tape Art

Mark Khaisman created these images using just layers of packing tape. Impressive.

Miniature Russia

A while back, I wrote about The World project in Dubai. I'm not sure that this quite tops it but it comes close! These artificial islands shaped like Russia will be built in the Black Sea in time for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. The project calls for building more than 10 islands and will include marinas, artificial rivers and apartments and villas to house 25,000 people. Link.

Give a Hand to Wildlife

I love the simplicity of these World Wildlife Fund adverts by saachi and saachi Switzerland. So much so that I collected several pictures... The body painter, Guido Daniele, is key to the success of these images and there were more hands painted than seen here.

via Ads of the World where they have BIG pics too - as well as a debate about this being a ripped off idea .

Feeling skint? Fancy a few extra pennies? Here's an incredibly in-depth "Boost Your Income" article from Money Saving Expert (MSE) that's packed full of schemes from selling your old stuff on ebay to becoming a texpert!

Spoit Brat II

I thought nothing could top Spoilt Brat I from July last year. I may have found a contender though... The Huffington Post's round up of "must see" online videos for the first week of January includes this clip from the TV show Wife Swap, about a spoiled teen and her doting parents...

Weird Adverts

Some very weird/creepy adverts from 2spare.

Talking Dogs

My two are off to training camp now...

Replica of Minas Troth

Last year they brought you Helm's Deep... This year they bring us Minas Tirith during the Battle of Pelennor Field and out-do themselves!

Eight Treehouses

A collection of eight "most amazing" tree houses from freshome. I want to live in a tree...

Local Girl's Day in Pictures

I love this blog from Local Girl and hope it continues! Such a delightfully simple idea - every day she draws her day!

The Big Ask

I have some concerns about the proposed Climate Change Bill so emailed my MP yesterday via the Friends of the Earth site (where they provide a template that you can add to). Easy as and I was very pleased to get an email response (agreeing with me) from Ian Gibson just two hours later! Democracy in motion.

More detail about the bill from defra here.

2008 Year of the Potato!

Who knew that the humble potato had a whole year dedicated to it? Or that 2008 would become the International Year of the Potato! On a slightly more serious note, "The mission of the International Year of the Potato is to increase awareness of the importance of the potato as a food in developing nations, and promote research and development of potato-based systems as a means of contributing to achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals."

The potato is seen as having a strong role to play in developing countries as it can produce “more nutritious food more quickly, on less land, and in harsher climates than any other major crop up to 85 percent of the plant is edible human food, compared to around 50% in cereals.”

Inspired? Grow some yourself.

Feeling Fruity!

I felt the need to post a declaration of love. Should I ever find myself in Texas, I shall make a pilgrimage to the Collins Street Bakery who post us a pecan fruit cake every year, courtesy of my in-laws. Everyone needs one of these to eat slices of for breakfast in the post-Christmas weeks. Mmmmm.
